So even though the household has more or less bailed on giving a damn about watching Doctor Who, I have nonetheless been keeping an eye on the progression of the show via the recap posts that get posted to The Mary Sue and to Tor.com. (Notably, this recap post and this one.
Accordingly, I am now aware of the major spoiler that got dropped in part 1 of the season finale this past Saturday! Discussion of same behind the fold. And this IS a major spoiler, so DO NOT LOOK if you don’t want to be spoiled.
Where I Belong, by Alan Doyle. Memoir. I bought the hardcopy of this from greatbigsea.com earlier this year, but of course I wanted the ebook too.
Green Rider, by Kristen Britain. Fantasy. Re-buy of a book previously owned in print, the first of her ongoing series that finally had a book five show up. I’m more likely to re-read books 1 and 2 if I have them electronically, so this is me going about getting those.
The Forest of Hands and Teeth, by Carrie Ryan. YA/Zombies. Another re-buy of a book previously owned in print, because I want to get caught up on her zombie books, too.
Writing Out the Notes, by Bob Hallett. Another memoir. Because as long as I’m reading stuff by Great Big Sea musicians, I really ought to finally read this too! I’ve got a print copy, but it’s available in ebook as well.

Unbound, by Jim C. Hines. Urban fantasy. Book 3 of his Magic Ex Libris series, which I went ahead and pre-ordered on general Supporting Mr. Hines principles, particularly since he recently drew the ire of GamerGate.
127 for the year. And I’m counting the Hines as this year even though it doesn’t drop till January, because I’m paying for it now.
So this is kinda lollertastic: Dara and I have a credit card that we’ve had via the University of Kentucky credit union, pretty much ever since Dara graduated college. This card generates points that we can trade in for swag every so often, a thing we tend to forget about. Recently the card folks reminded Dara that she’d accumulated a LOT of points, so she and I blew a bunch of them on getting some stuff.
And because one of the things available was a Kindle Fire in a couple different flavors, I decided, what the hell, I’ll get one of those! I chose the Kindle Fire HDX, the 7-inch one, on the thought that I could in fact use it for work-related purposes. (Which I can. Since Big Fish ships Android games for both the Amazon and Google Play stores, we do care about Kindle-specific stuff sometimes. And as I write this, I have in fact used the Kindle a few times to test stuff for my day job.)
Here now are my thoughts on this device, behind the fold!
As a general note of interest, I’ve updated a few things on the site today.
First, I’ve added several bits to the FAQ, to update the references to Vengeance of the Hunter, to add references to Victory of the Hawk, and to clarify what genres I write in and what other authors are useful to compare me to. Also, for giggles, I’ve added in a bit about this whole Quebecois trad thing I can’t shut up about, the Trilingual Hobbit Reread, and what other things you can expect me to start posting about once the Rebels of Adalonia trilogy is done.
Secondly, I’ve activated pages for both Victory of the Hawk and Bone Walker. Both are pretty bare-bones at this point, but they ARE the official sources of data for both of these books. Watch them for further updates. You’ll be able to find both of these books on the site’s Books menu now.
Third, the Rebels of Adalonia page has been updated to include Victory‘s official release date of April 6, 2015.
Ladies and gentlemen, mesdames et messieurs, all my pals of the Internet, last night I finished the final scene in the initial draft of Victory of the Hawk. There is an Invader Zim quote that seems appropriate at this time:
I have fired the complete, LONG overdue manuscript to my editor and am now on standby for her requested developmental edits, which I am expecting to fall on my head any time now. Chances of my needing to hunker down this weekend to work on these edits are VERY high. Chances are also good that when I go up to Canada next month, I’ll be charging through line and/or copy edits by then, too. Given how long it took me to turn this thing in, I promised my editor as well that I’ll be doing everything in my power to get the edits done as fast as possible. We need to finish this puppy up before Christmas.
Meanwhile, given that our targeted release date is April 6, 2015, I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you all that if you like high fantasy and you haven’t yet read Valor of the Healer and Vengeance of the Hunter, now would be a very good time for you to do so. The two of them together are only around six bucks from Carina! And as always, you can find all the buy links you can shake a stick at on the Rebels of Adalonia page right over here. Don’t forget, either, Valor of the Healer is also available in audio format.
I have to clear Victory off my plate before I can also turn long overdue attention back to Bone Walker, but stand by for updates on that score, too. I hope to be diving back into that the instant I finish the final Victory edits.

And also? HOLY CRAP YOU GUYS this means I’ve written six, count ’em, six complete novels. Victory will be my fourth one on actual sale, and I’m VERY much looking forward to getting Bone Walker out to you hopefully at the same time if not before, to become novel #5 on sale. And then? Then comes Queen of Souls!
For those of you who didn’t see me post this to the social networks or to my LJ and Dreamwidth accounts, we had a windstorm last night and that took out power at my house for several hours.
Since my site is hosted on my home servers, that meant angelahighland.com was inaccessible for the duration. But now we’ve got power back and the servers came back up, so the site is live again.
