Apparently Ilona Andrews and Carina use the same hot cover models

This just got brought to my attention on Twitter by fellow Carina author Nicole Luiken: the husband-and-wife team that write under the name Ilona Andrews have this post up today as an April Fools gag, for a book which does not actually exist.

And as soon as I saw it I saw why Nicole pointed me at it, because that cover guy? LOOKS MIGHTY FAMILIAR, doesn’t he? 😀

So yeah, apparently Ilona Andrews and Carina Press pull from the same pool of hot cover models. >:D BRB, laughing forever!

(Also, HI to any Ilona Andrews readers who drop by!)

Victory of the Hawk

On how to read Victory of the Hawk

Happened to find another Victory of the Hawk review googling this afternoon, and while I am not going to go and engage directly with that review, I will note that the reviewer freely admitted that they had not read the first two books in the trilogy. Accordingly, and, well, justifiably, they were rather confused and this impacted their ability to enjoy the book.

So let me emphasize, just to get this on the record: if you want to read Victory of the Hawk, and you have not already read Valor of the Healer and Vengeance of the Hunter, yes, you will be very confused!

It has always been my intent that the Rebels of Adalonia trilogy should be considered one big story split into three books, akin to how Lord of the Rings is split into three books. (This being the ONLY scenario in which you will hear me mention my work and Tolkien’s in the same ballpark, heh.) My editor for these books kept trying to get me to write books 2 and 3 to try to allow for new readers coming in, but this is a fantasy trilogy, people. You don’t come into a fantasy trilogy two books in and expect to know what’s going on. You just don’t.

So yeah. If you have any interest in reading Victory, and you haven’t already, get caught up and read Valor and Vengeance!

Fortunately, you can get the whole series for less than the price of a trade paperback, and comparable to the price of many mass market paperbacks! How awesome is that? You can find all the pertinent links to buy the books on the Valor of the Healer, Vengeance of the Hunter, and Victory of the Hawk pages!

And now that Victory is about to release, let me say that I am VERY proud of how this whole story came out. Elapsed turnaround time between a slave girl healing an assassin and the shakedown of the entire Adalonian religious system: three years and three books real time, a handful of weeks in-universe. And if you choose to read Victory, I hope you’ll enjoy this conclusion to the Rebels of Adalonia story!

Bone Walker, Faerie Blood, Victory of the Hawk

Norwescon is IMMINENT so here, have some Smashwords coupons

Dara and I will be heading to Norwescon tomorrow! Yay!

Y’all will be able to find me at the NIWA table in the dealers’ room, where I and several other members of the group will be joining forces to sell our books. I’ll have print copies of both Faerie Blood AND Bone Walker, so if you’re local and you don’t have the books yet and you want ’em, this will be an excellent time to get copies!

I will also be selling copies of the Free Court of Seattle Soundtrack CD on Dara’s behalf, so if you really want to make a fell swoop of it, you’ll be able to get both books and the CD all at the same time!

ALSO: for the digitally inclined, I have activated two 20 percent off coupons you can use to buy both books from Smashwords in DRM-free format!

The coupon code for Faerie Blood is ZS73N, and you can spend it here.

Likewise, the coupon code for Bone Walker is TA27R, and you can spend it here.

These coupon codes will expire on Monday the 6th, so use ’em now while the using is good! And if you’ve got the books already, please share the word of these coupons far and wide. Thank you!

Speaking of Bone Walker: Dara has now provided me with the official PDF copy of the book. If you prefer to read your ebooks in PDF format, I will be happy to hand-sell this version of the book to you. Directly from me is currently the only way to get this format, so if you’d like a PDF copy (and you’re not one of the Kickstarter backers who already got one), talk to me! And see the Buying From Me page for details on how to pay me for it.

MEANWHILE: friendly reminder that Victory of the Hawk is REALLY FREGGIN’ NIGH. Monday the 6th is ALSO important because that’s Victory‘s release date!

AND: you can now preorder the book directly from Carina Press right over here. I do get slightly more royalties for books purchased directly from Carina. BUT, don’t let that stop you from buying from the vendor of your choice, either–basically, I want you to buy the book, so do please buy it in whatever way is easiest for you! 😉

All preorder links I’m currently aware of are on the official Victory of the Hawk page!

One more thing: in case you missed it, the Here Be Magic author group I’m in has been posting our snippets of flash fiction based on submitted words from readers! You can find mine, a brand new Warder universe scene, right over here. Clickie to see what words I got for the March Melange, and how I used them.

And go check the blog for other fun scenes as well!

This ends my Wednesday book promotional post. 🙂

Music

Going to Fiddle Tunes!

This summer I will be doing a first for me: going to a musical workshop camp! Specifically, I’m going to Fiddle Tunes!

“But Anna,” I hear you cry, “you’re not a fiddle player!” This is true! But I am a guitarist, and there are several guitarists that will be teaching at this camp. Most notably, André Marchand!

If you know anything about Quebecois music at all, you may know this man’s name. At minimum, if you know anything about La Bottine Souriante, you’ve very likely heard him. He’s a veteran of the genre, with a long history with La Bottine and later with Les Charbonniers de l’Enfer. He also has recorded with flautist Grey Larsen, is one third of the trio Le Bruit Court Dans La Ville (all of whom will also be at Fiddle Tunes!), and has recorded with a few of the other Charbonniers gentlemen under the name Les Mononcles as well.

While my blatant fangirling is reserved for Le Vent du Nord and De Temps Antan, my general musical respect for the Quebecois trad genre owes a lot to Monsieur Marchand. He’s an excellent singer–several of my repeat-play La Bottine and Charbonniers tracks are things he sings lead on. But he’s also a fine guitarist, and I feel I would be entirely bonkers crazypants to pass up a chance to learn from him.

Bonus: my pal Dejah will also be there, and she will in fact be acting as M. Marchand’s assistant, providing translation assistance to help jump the language barrier. And a bit of a musical barrier as well, since Francophones use a system of scales oriented around “do re mi fa so la ti do”–so what an English speaker thinks of as the key of C, a French speaker’s going to be calling the key of do. D becomes re, E becomes mi, and so on.

I am very much looking forward to tackling this. Not only for exposure to a different way of thinking about musical scales, not only for a chance to learn from a veteran of the Quebecois trad genre (and maybe get in a bit of practice listening to someone speak French), but in general to just be able to sit down with people who know what they’re doing and improve my general ability to play. I feel like I’ve gone about as far as I can on my own, as a self-taught guitarist who just likes to doink around with the instrument. Talking to skilled musicians and learning from them will open up all sorts of new and exciting things to practice!

I’ll also be taking my carbon fiber flutes and the good whistle, mind you–because if any all-melody-instrument tunes sessions break out, I want to be prepared to practice learning those, too. And there will be some organization of participants into bands, too! So maybe somebody will want a flute or a whistle. 😀

These musical shenanigans will be taking place in the last week of June, and will be taking place out in Port Townsend in Washington–which is the other reason I want to go to this thing. It’s a camp I can get to by car. And since I won’t need to get on a plane, I can bring the General.

Because if I’m going to learn from a veteran of the Quebec trad genre, better believe I want to bring the good guitar!

SO EXCITED. This is going to be huge fun. Y’all may expect I’ll report on the experience in depth!

Boosting the Signal, Carina Press

Boosting the Signal: The Epherium Chronicles: Echoes, by T.D. Wilson

Today’s Boosting the Signal is the latest installment of The Epherium Chronicles, from fellow Carina author T.D. Wilson. Because yay, SF! T.D.’s been on Boosting the Signal before with a prior installment of this series, and now, we’re revisiting his protagonist–who has the larger goal of the safety of humanity jammed up against how he must report on the death of a friend.

Earth Year 2155

James Hood stared at the blank screen of his terminal. An hour had passed with him sitting at his desk, and he hadn’t typed a single word of the letter he intended. In truth, he didn’t know where to start. As a warship Captain, he had written many letters over the past several years to family of fallen crew members under his command, but this occasion was altogether different. This message of condolence was for a close friend and the circumstances of his death were shrouded in conspiracy.

Hood stood from his comfortable chair and shook his head in disgust. EDF Command had created different magnitudes of elite cover ups in the past, often to hide to the unfortunate intangibles that the public couldn’t properly digest, but this time they fabricated a façade to promote a sense of order among the rank and file. The truth behind the falsehoods was that the brass was scared. He couldn’t believe that Admiral Grant, the supreme commander of the EDF fleet, would actually go along with it. The mere reality of that fact made the pain in his heart even greater.

Turning away from the terminal, Hood walked over to the nearby viewport and stared down at the lush green planet below. He was certain many in the upper echelon of the EDF had no idea what was orchestrating the unrest back home, but after what his people experienced on the planet surface, he had a pretty good idea now. There was a horrible darkness stalking humanity, and Hood was certain that the recent events on Earth were at its direction. This new enemy’s long term goals were still unknown, but it has the power to feed on people’s fears and turn friends into bitter enemies.

The Tau Ceti star appeared on the horizon of the planet and its warm light bathed the sky below in a yellowish orange glow. Inspiration swelled within Hood. Just like the life giving power of the nearby star, his people had managed to thwart the darkness at the new colony. The thought of their victory gave him renewed hope. He didn’t have all the answers, but he had faith they would be revealed when Earth and the EDF needed them most.

Hood spun on his heel and returned to his desk. His fingers struck the letters on the digital key pad with vigor. “Victoria, it is with deep regret that I must confirm to you the news of the untimely death of your husband. Russell died doing what he always hoped he would—saving a life of a friend…”
