Other People's Books

Quick book roundup: Tolkien, Priest, McGuire, and Quebecois French!

Grabbed in print from Third Place Books:

  • Maplecroft, by Cherie Priest. Which I already have in ebook form, but she’s one of my Must Also Have in Print authors. And because this book in particular is Lizzie friggin’ Borden and it is AWESOME.
  • The Winter Long, by Seanan McGuire. Because I swear to gods I need to get caught up on the Toby Dayes. And I suspect Seanan’s going to be joining the “buy in both formats” queue because seriously, y’all, I DO read faster digitally these days. And OH DARN I’ll just have to give Seanan more money!
J.R.R. Tolkien: The Making of a Legend

J.R.R. Tolkien: The Making of a Legend

Grabbed electronically from B&N:

  • J.R.R. Tolkien: The Making of a Legend, by Colin Duriez. Grabbed this because my sister alerted me that the ebook was on sale for 99 cents–and of course, because Tolkien. I haven’t read a proper biography of him, and this one appears to be well reviewed. So I’ll look forward to giving it a go.

Last but not least:

  • C’est what? 75 mini lessons in conversational Québécois French, by Felix Polesello. This is a lesson book by the writer of the excellent OffQc blog I’ve been following, which features real-world usage of Quebecois French. Pretty much what it says on the tin and I’m looking forward to working my way through this to help improve my French!

This makes six books for the year so far.

Bone Walker, Faerie Blood

Bone Walker giveaway goodness!

Now that I’ve got my mitts on the first full print run for Bone Walker, in addition to all the copies I’m sending out to my patient Kickstarter backers, I can ALSO do giveaways!

So I’ve set one up on Goodreads for two copies, which will be running through to the end of March. This is open to any Goodreads users in the US and Canada–sorry, overseas folks, postage for sending individual copies of books is just too steep for me to send freebies out to people who weren’t Kickstarter backers! If you’re a US or Canadian Goodreads user, though, here’s the giveaway widget! Clickie!

ETA: putting this behind a fold because the Javascript breaks on Livejournal. If you’re reading this on LJ or Dreamwidth, the direct link for the giveaway is here!

Quebecois Music

Le Vent du Nord at the Rogue, Vancouver, BC 2/23/2015

As you know, O Internets, in the ongoing dearth of Great Big Sea shows in my life, I have turned to the joy and consolation of the principle of “Any Band With a Beaudry gets me across the border”. Which of course means mes gars of De Temps Antan–who last year broke my personal record of “How many times I visited Canada in one year to see the same band”–and most definitely, Le Vent du Nord!

By now the Rogue in Vancouver has a very warm place in my heart, since I’ve seen both Le Vent and De Temps Antan there twice each. This time around the venue was not set up with tables, which surprised me! But Le Vent did sell the place out, so it does not surprise me that they wanted to get as many people in there as possible. And most importantly, they did leave space for us to boing by the stage as we liked. That’s important, you know.

As for the show itself–it’ll surprise exactly no one that I enjoyed myself immensely. Particularly because this show included five, count ’em, five brand new songs that’ll be on the forthcoming new album, AND because we got the rare and unexpected treat of Olivier Demers taking a break from his usual masterful fiddling to demonstrate that he also plays guitar. AND: “Papineau”, a multi-layered turlutte that showcases all four of the boys’ voices to splendid effect, is now officially one of my top favorite Le Vent songs and that album isn’t even OUT yet. Everyone was in excellent voice and high spirits, band and audience alike, and by the end of the proceedings we had quite the crowd dancing around to “Au bord de la fontaine”. It was AWESOME.

In-depth show proceedings behind the fold!

Bone Walker, Faerie Blood

Monday news: print editions, Boosting the Signal posts, and a giveaway!

Now that I’m back from my latest trip to Canada (which went splendidly and the obligatory concert report is on the way), just wanted to get out a quick update on the status of print copies of Faerie Blood and Bone Walker.

I am down to a scant two copies of Faerie Blood, after selling quite a few at Conflikt, and I’ve just sold the latest one today to one of my Kickstarter backers in St. John’s. (HI EMMA!) One of the others is already spoken for for giveaway purposes (more on this in a minute), and that leaves me one that is not currently spoken for.

So if anybody wants that last copy of Faerie Blood, now would be a good time to jump over to the merch page for it on Bandcamp and order it! Because once it’s gone, that’ll be it for a bit until I get my next print run in. Alternately, go to the Buying From Me page for instructions on how to order it from me directly if you don’t want to go through Bandcamp.

***

And speaking of print editions: I have a big ol’ shiny new box of Bone Walker! This is the rest of the first print run, a good number of which will be heading out to Kickstarter backers over the next couple of weeks, as well as other folks who have paid me for a copy (HI OLO). One of these will also be reserved for giveaway purposes, and I’ll be handing out a couple via a Goodreads giveaway as well.

But that’ll leave me a whole bunch of other copies that will be available for purchase, even before my next convention–which’ll be Norwescon. So if you want a print copy of this book, you can order that from Bandcamp too, here. Or, again, go look at the Buying From Me page for other options.

BEHOLD THE SHINY! Who wants one? 😀

Now about that first giveaway I mentioned! Long-time friend and supporter of my work David has asked my and Dara’s permission to do a giveaway of both books and the soundtrack on his blog. That giveaway is in progress right over here, so if you’d like to throw your hat into the ring, click on over there and check out his post! Note that he will also be handing out digital copies of both books as a second prize.

All you have to do is drop him a comment telling him why you’d like to be the winner. Creativity and cleverness count!

He’ll be running this giveaway until March 8th, so you have a bit of time. I’ll be issuing periodic reminders until the giveaway is done! So clickie!

Stand by for further updates re: the Goodreads giveaway I’ll be setting up. AND! One more thing about that new box of books I’ve got–I’ve got a few extras that turned out to be misprints, with slightly screwed up covers. Third Place gave me those as extras since they can’t use them, so I can give them to interested parties as review copies.

So if you’re willing to commit to writing a review of the book on Amazon and/or Goodreads, talk to me and I can set you up with a copy!

I’ll have two, count ’em, two Boosting the Signal posts coming this week so stand by for those on Friday! One will be from fellow Carina author Caitlin Sinead, and another will be from an author that’s new to me, Sharon Black–but who caught my interest querying me about her romantic comedy set at a newspaper. Check back with me on Friday for those posts! And stand by for next week’s Boosting the Signal for another Carina author, T.D. Wilson, and his latest SF release!

More news tomorrow!

Bone Walker

Attention, everybody who backed the Bone Walker Kickstarter

THIS JUST IN:

I have an ETA on when the rest of the first Bone Walker print run is expected to be done, and when I can therefore pick books up. This ETA is this coming Monday, one week from today.

If you are a backer of my 2012 Kickstarter and you are owed a copy of Bone Walker, OR a postcard or poster of the cover art, please consider this your reminder to let me know ASAP if your contact data has changed! It is very, VERY important to let me know this so that I can send you the long-overdue stuff you are owed!

You can visit the project page and scroll down to your reward level. There, you should see a link you can use to update your address data on the survey I sent out before asking for that very thing. Update your physical address AND your email address if necessary; I know of at least one backer who’s changed email addresses since I originally ran the project. She’s already told me about her change, but if anybody else out there has new email addresses I need to know about, I need to hear from you about that as well.

Alternately, you may DM/PM me on the social networks, or email me at my annathepiper address on gmail to get me your data.

Speaking of the posters and postcards: they’re not ready yet but I hope to have them ready soon. Please stand by for updates on that too!

Any questions? Let me know!

General reminders: How to buy my books

Now that Bone Walker has been released, I’m starting to get asked this again, so a quick general reminder:

If you want to buy either Bone Walker OR Faerie Blood in print, you have two options.

One, order them via the pages Dara has set up on Bandcamp. Those pages are here for Faerie Blood, and here for Bone Walker. If you order from there, the book is slightly more expensive because we need to allow for Bandcamp taking a cut of the sale. However, the tradeoff is that you can also use all methods of payment that Bandcamp can accept, including credit cards. The asking price for either book there is $17 + $3 shipping to US addresses, $6 shipping to Canadian addresses, and $8 for shipping anywhere else.

Two, you can order the books directly from me. Best way to pay me is via Paypal. Buying directly from me makes the price $15 per book, but the shipping costs remain the same. See the Buying From Me page for details.

***

Second quick general reminder: both Faerie Blood and Bone Walker are available on all the major ebook vendors where I usually sell stuff: Amazon, B&N, iBooks, Smashwords, Kobo, and Google Play. Links to buy on all those sites can be found on the Faerie Blood and Bone Walker pages.

I will also hand-sell copies of the books to people if you don’t want to go through any specific vendor’s ecosystem. Again, see the Buying From Me page for details.

***

Third quick general reminder: Victory of the Hawk IS available for preorder! I’ve found it up on Amazon, B&N, iBooks, Kobo, and Google Play, and as soon as a page for it goes live on Carina’s own site, I’ll be linking up to that. All links for preordering Victory can be found on the Victory of the Hawk page.

And if you haven’t read Valor of the Healer or Vengeance of the Hunter yet, they do remain quite the steal at $2.99 each, so consider picking those up if you haven’t already! You should read Valor and Vengeance in order for Victory to really make best sense. While I have done my best to give new readers context if they come in cold on Victory, the Rebels of Adalonia trilogy IS intended to be one big story. I do recommend you read it as such.

ALSO: don’t forget, Valor is available as an audiobook, and while Audible has not elected to do an audio edition of Vengeance of the Hunter, they might change their minds if the Valor audiobook shows some signs of life. So consider picking that up if you like audiobooks!

This concludes this Monday promotional announcement. ^_^

Boosting the Signal

Boosting the Signal: Raven’s Wing, by Shawna Reppert

Shawna Reppert has quite a bit in common with me–fellow Carina author, fellow NIWA author, and fellow writer of urban fantasy set in the Pacific Northwest. I’ve actually already featured this book, before on Boosting the Signal, but that was while she was running the Indiegogo campaign for it. Now the book is out and available, and Shawna’s sent me another piece for the book. This time, her character Chuckie would like to have a word with you!

Raven's Wing

Raven’s Wing

Hi, Chuckie here.

I know I’m not the first image that comes to mind when you say the words ‘Guardian International Investigations.’ I’m built like a scarecrow and my defensive magic isn’t much better than above-average. You’re more likely to find me on a computer than at the gym. I’m an oddball even for GI-squared, and that’s saying something.

I mean, my boss’s ID may say ‘Abigail Andrews’, but everyone calls her ‘Sherlock’, as much for her pipe and her tweed as for her brilliant deductive skills and her Anglan accent.

My partner, at first blush, might seem like what the Joint Council had in mind when they set up GI-squared. Cass Greensdowne once clocked damned near a four-minute mile and she can outlift about half the men in the department. But it’s the strength of her magic and her creativity in using it that make her stand out. So, poster-girl Guardian material—except that she learned her chops apprenticing to Corwyn Ravenscroft back when he was still a dark mage. Of course, she didn’t believe at the time that he was a dark mage, no matter what anyone said, and—well, that’s a long story.

I have been accused of rambling.

So, I know I’m not the hero of any tale, and I’m okay with that. Heroes always catch the worst of whatever goes down. Honestly, when I see what Cass and Raven go through…though Raven would never admit to being a hero, he totally is. He risked not only death, but horrible death, to take down William, and took himself past the point of exhaustion to finish the job. Damned near killed himself.

He’ll tell you that it was atonement, or enlightened self-interest, blah, blah, blah. Just like all those cases he’s helped us with, the ones he’s worked night and day on, the ones where he’s saved lives, those were just because he was bored and needed the intellectual stimulation. Yeah, right.

And I’m rambling again. Cass, if she were here, would be glaring at me to warn me to get to the point already.

So, you asked me about my goals. Which I take it is a more polite way of asking what a scrawny geek like me is doing working for Guardian International Investigations. No, don’t bother to apologize, I get it all the time and, frankly, it doesn’t bother me. Much.

The thing is, as smart and as fast and as good at magic as the heroes are, there’s some things they can’t do. Let’s face it, given a Mundane computer, half the mages in the city don’t know a mouse from a mainframe. But there is a certain criminal element, mostly young and up-and-coming, that know how to interface computer knowledge with mage skills. I know, ’cause I used to be one. I was only out for a laugh, but I did some pretty major damage, and I’d like to think what I’m doing now makes up for that in some way. And hey, maybe I can stop some kid someday before he does something he’ll regret the rest of his life.

(Yeah, I know I seem all happy-go-lucky, but I still have nightmares sometimes.)

Even when someone isn’t getting creative with magic and Mundane technology for all the wrong reasons, the computer’s a useful tool in getting information fast, and that’s useful if you need to know now how many heirs there might be to a certain bloodline if only those heirs are capable of using a magical artifact that’s gone missing. Like, say, the Ravensblood.

I’m like the smith who shoes the knight’s horse before some fairytale battle. I may not be a hero, but I help make the heroism happen. And that’s good enough for this geek.
