Carina Press, Rebels of Adalonia, Valor of the Healer

It BEGINS!

Holy hopping Christ on a pogo stick, you guys! Look what I just found! Pre-order links for Valor of the Healer, on Amazon and on Barnes and Noble! No cover art yet or cover copy–these are very early links–but they are THERE.

And if you click over to Carina’s Coming Soon page and scroll down to April, OMG. I’m there.

Coming Soon: Valor of the Healer!

Coming Soon: Valor of the Healer!

Between this and starting to get some emails in my inbox with early rumblings of info on What’s Going to Happen Next, I’m starting to get super-excited here, people. I’ve seen round 1 of both cover art and cover copy, and as soon as I have final versions of both that I’m cleared to post, I’ll be putting up an official Valor of the Healer page similar to the one I have up for Faerie Blood!

You guys. I’M GOING TO HAVE ANOTHER BOOK!

About Me

Christmas at the Murkworks

The holidays are always a pretty low-key and kind of drawn-out affair at the Murkworks. As happens every year, Housemate Paul went to Virginia to see his family; thus, we held off the house gift exchange until he returned. Mostly, the holidays for Dara and me meant a relaxing vacation that nonetheless also involved working on music (on Dara’s behalf) and working on Bone Walker (on mine).

That said, Paul’s back now and we DID have our house gift exchange! Also on hand for the festivities were longstanding house pal Mimi as well as visiting guest Cygnet. There was tasty handmade chocolate given by Cygnet from a chocolatier she likes! And Meems gave me the third season of Due South, which I still need to get caught up on! (Seriously, you guys, I’m behind on so many things I should be watching.)

BUT! The two biggest coolest things were from Paul and Dara. For Paul’s gift, I present a bit of backstory! Back in 2007, some of y’all may recall, we went to Japan for Worldcon and had ourselves an Awesome Vacation of Awesomeness. One of the things we noticed while we were over there, though, was that Kit Kats in Japan come in approximately eight hundred and thirty-seven flavors. Way, WAY more than you ever see in the States. It got to the point where I kept ducking into corner convenience stores just to see what flavors of Kit Kat they were carrying. Which is, in fact, a Thing there–different stores having different flavors!

So for this year’s gift exchange, Paul gave me a big ol’ gift box from Japan full of different Kit Kat flavors! It’s laid out like an Advent calendar (only, y’know, totally wrong religion and all), with little windows you can punch open to find out what flavor of Kit Kat is inside. The one I tried last night was Citrus Golden Blend and I swear it tasted like an orange creamsicle. SO TASTY. It is probably for the best that these are not available in the States. Because I would be buying ALL OF THEM.

Behold the pics of tasty goodness!

And if that wasn’t awesome enough? Dara TOTALLY warmed my heart with what she had made for me. She got a Faerie Blood cover, printed on really good paper, matted and framed for me. Sniff. <3 And now this lovely, lovely thing is hanging right by the couch where I usually do all my writing! When we do the Bone Walker cover, that’ll be joining it as well! Check it out!

Book Log

2012 Book Log #16: Sweet Enemy, by Heather Snow

Sweet Enemy (Veiled Seduction, #1)

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Sweet Enemy was a recommendation I picked up from my regular visits to SmartBitchesTrashyBooks.com, a book that falls into the general category of historical romances with bluestocking heroines. This book’s heroine, Liliana Claremont, is a brilliant chemist who chafes at the restrictions that society places upon her, keeping her from pursuing achievements in that science. But when she discovers that her father may well have been murdered, she’s determined to look for evidence at the house of Geoffrey Wentworth, the Earl of Stratford.

Geoffrey’s our obligatory broody hero, whose family is throwing the obligatory mess of young misses at him in an attempt to get him to marry. Liliana’s own family pressures her to go to his estate in the hopes of catching the Earl’s eye–but all Liliana’s interested in is finding out whether this man was responsible for her father’s murder.

Now, this is a setup guaranteed to catch my attention, and it did a decent job of it. Ms. Snow’s writing was solid, and I did very much like the shooting contest scene, in which Liliana actually gets to use her chemistry knowledge. Set off against this, though, were tropes that usually weary me in a romance novel and this time was no exception: i.e., the failure of characters to just talk to each other, insta-lust, and how the Big Misunderstanding that almost always causes the characters to fight almost always comes after they’ve finally had sex.

But that said? I did actually enjoy this book for the most part and I’d like to see how Ms. Snow’s writing in this series progresses. Three stars.

Trilingual Hobbit Reread

Tri-lingual Hobbit re-read: Chapter 8

This is the first of the Tri-lingual Hobbit Re-Read posts I’m making from angelahighland.com rather than annathepiper.org; I hope those of you who’ve been following me on the other site will pick them up again here. And for those of you who may be just recently joining me on angelahighland.com (hi, fellow Carina authors!), I hope you’ll enjoy this linguistic geekery!

Those of you who are following me from LJ or Dreamwidth, you shouldn’t see any change in these posts, except for a different site showing up in the ‘Mirrored from’ tag.

And for those of you who may just be joining me, I’m re-reading The Hobbit! But I’m doing it in three languages at once: the original English, but also German and French, since I’m interested in learning both languages and I consider this excellent practice. So join me for hobbits and dwarves and wizards and language geeking, as I dive into Chapter 8, “Flies and Spiders”.

And as long as I’m sprucing up the place, here, have a cat

George came along while I was juggling data around between my blogs and promptly demanded access to the lap. I think he may also have thought I couldn’t update my site without his help. But I’m dubious about his WordPress skills!

Importing some content from annathepiper.org, and other housekeeping

To tie in to my earlier post that I’m going to be shifting a lot of my posting over to this blog, I’m going to prep for that by importing certain content from annathepiper.org over to here. This is currently going to include, but may not be limited to:

  • Book Roundup posts, the running tallies I keep of how many books I buy
  • Book reviews
  • Anything pertaining to geeking out about the bands I’m following, primarily Great Big Sea and Le Vent du Nord, but also Quebec trad in general
  • Anything pertaining to music I’m actually playing as well, such as practicing for the local Quebec music crowd’s monthly sessions and such
  • My ongoing Tri-lingual Re-read of The Hobbit!
  • Movie and TV reviews

Basically, a lot of the higher-frequency geekery I tend to do is going to move over here in the name of having all my post traffic in one place. I’m importing the content to make it easier for folks to find the older posts if they want to see them. And relatedly, I’ll also be adjusting how comments work on this blog so that I can actually take comments on older posts.

I will NOT be deleting content off of annathepiper.org, since both blogs live on my server anyway and I don’t have to delete anything if I don’t want to. And because I’m an information packrat!

Anyway, be advised that this is in the works. Wanted to announce this before I do my next Hobbit re-read post!

Bone Walker

Bone Walker status update!

As I’ve just posted off to my Kickstarter backers, and as I’ve been happily reporting to the social networks through the course of the day, I just finished off the last chapter in Bone Walker that’s from Kendis’ point of view!

This means that now I swing back around to fill in the bits from other characters’ points of view, stuff that will convey to the reader things that Kendis never sees. Step 1 in this is sticking in a new Chapter 15, primarily from Christopher’s point of view but which will probably also feature some Jude. I’m expecting an earlier chapter is going to be from the point of view of Jake.

And the real fun is going to be figuring out where all to put in bits from Elessir’s POV, because oh my yes, he’s going to get some camera time too.

I’ve done the multiple POVs thing before; I did it in the still as of yet unedited Queen of Souls, and all you fine folks are going to be seeing it when Valor of the Healer comes out in April as well. But this is the first time I’ll be doing it in the Warder universe, and I’m really hoping it’ll work okay with this story flow!

Soon, hopefully in the first half of January, my Kickstarter backers are going to get first crack at seeing whether it does. And anybody else who’s willing to beta read for me is going to get a shot too. So if you’re interested in a beta read shot at this book and getting your name into the Acknowledgements in the back, talk to me!

Looking forward to finishing this thing up finally and sharing it with you all! 😀
