Valor of the Healer

Will there be a print edition of Valor of the Healer?

Since I’m already getting asked about this, I’d like to issue a general reminder: there will not, at least at first, be a print edition of the forthcoming Valor of the Healer.

This is basically because Carina Press is primarily a digital imprint. Carina does release a small number of titles to retail print, but from what I’m being told, there are several factors that dictate whether a book will be released in print to the retail market–and it’s a decision that Carina makes in conjunction with parent company Harlequin.

Carina is investigating other means of delivering print editions to readers, but details on these are not solidified so there’s not much I can say to this yet. When I have more details I can share, I will definitely let everyone know.

The good news is, though, that Carina is a DRM-free imprint. Anyone in the world can go straight to Carina’s site and buy books right off the site. Or, you’ll be able to find them on the major ebook sales sites as well–Amazon, B&N, Kobo, iTunes, Sony, etc. EPUB will be the major format being delivered (unless of course you’re a Kindle reader, in which case you’ll be getting a Kindle file), but since it’s DRM-free you will be able to convert it in Calibre if you need to!

If you have a vested interest, though, in seeing Valor go to print, here’s what you can do to help: buy the book. Even if you’re not a digital reader yourself, if you can think of people you can gift it to who would like to read it digitally, do that. My sales numbers will be only one of the factors Carina and Harlequin would look at to dictate whether or not to print it, but if the book actively sells, that will help.

Spreading the word will help, too. Some early reviews would be excellent. If you’re a book blogger, I have a shiny production-class PDF I can hand you right now if you’d like to review the book. I’ll have an EPUB on the way as well that I can share with reviewers. If you’re not a reviewer but you know people who are, point me at them, or point them at me, or both!

If you’re not an official book reviewer, you can still help once the book drops by reviewing it on Amazon, on B&N, on Goodreads, and anywhere else that it’s possible to talk about the book. Talk it up on your social networks, on your blogs and journals, wherever it might be at all appropriate.

Getting excited here, people! Faanshi and Julian and Kestar have all been living in my head for years now–especially Faanshi and Julian–and I’m very eager to share this story with you all!

Valor of the Healer

I need your review blog recommendations!

RIGHT THEN, I have to start thinking about getting the word out for Valor of the Healer, since this puppy’s dropping on April 15th!

Now, as y’all know, Valor is predominantly high fantasy, albeit with romantic elements. By ‘romantic elements’, I mean, there’s a love story on the side, but the focus is on the fantasy rather than on the romance. You may expect that I’m not going to get explicit with any expression of said romance, since that’s generally not my m.o.

My question for you, O Internets, is this: which review blogs shall I contact about potentially reviewing it?

Some of you who may be reading this are people who reviewed Faerie Blood in the past, so if you’d be up for taking a look at Valor, do let me know.

But I’d also like to start pinging any blogs which are:

  • Primarily focused on SF/F, but which are also friendly to romance-friendly works
  • Specifically targeted at SF/F with romantic elements
  • Geek-girl friendly
  • General fantasy

Valor is not yet on NetGalley, but Carina does maintain a presence there, so Valor should hopefully be showing up there sometime in March. I’m also on the alert for when I myself will have access to ARCs to distribute as appropriate.

Note also that as Carina is a digital publisher, any blog that reviews it has to naturally be friendly to digital-only publications!

So if you’ve got recs, or if you’ve got specific interest in reviewing the book and are yourself a review blogger, please talk to me and thank you in advance! And signal boost, O Internets! Signal boost like the wind!

Cover art for Valor of the Healer!

For those of you not following me on the social networks, I can now show you this, now that my agent and I have signed off. Behold, the cover art for Valor of the Healer, coming to ereaders NEAR YOU on April 15th!

It is very, very odd seeing Faanshi now with an actual face. 😀 She’s more scantily clad here than I tend to envision her, but y’all can think of this as the Faanshi that the storyline is going to be aiming for, not necessarily matched up in details to the Faanshi who starts the story.

It BEGINS!

Holy hopping Christ on a pogo stick, you guys! Look what I just found! Pre-order links for Valor of the Healer, on Amazon and on Barnes and Noble! No cover art yet or cover copy–these are very early links–but they are THERE.

And if you click over to Carina’s Coming Soon page and scroll down to April, OMG. I’m there.

Coming Soon: Valor of the Healer!

Coming Soon: Valor of the Healer!

Between this and starting to get some emails in my inbox with early rumblings of info on What’s Going to Happen Next, I’m starting to get super-excited here, people. I’ve seen round 1 of both cover art and cover copy, and as soon as I have final versions of both that I’m cleared to post, I’ll be putting up an official Valor of the Healer page similar to the one I have up for Faerie Blood!

You guys. I’M GOING TO HAVE ANOTHER BOOK!

Bone Walker, Valor of the Healer

Long overdue update

Most of you who follow me on the various social networks, or who read the posts I make via my personal blog annathepiper.org (whether there or on LJ/Dreamwidth), know this already–but for those of you who don’t, a couple of weeks ago I was briefly, violently ill. I had to spend four days in the hospital, but happily, the problem was relatively easy to deal with. And I’m feeling a lot better now! This did mean though that I was thrown for a pretty massive loop for a couple of weeks, while I dealt with recovering.

The good news though (well, aside from yay! I’m feeling better!) is that Valor of the Healer is officially DONE and has been handed off to my editor. Now comes the waiting for exciting things like cover art! And final blurb copy! And learning about how Carina’s ARC process works!

In related news, I’ve also finally officially signed the Carina contract. You guys, I’m a contracted Carina Press author. I feel all grown up. *happysniff*

Meanwhile! Now that Valor is done, this frees up my brain for returning to Bone Walker. The goal is to try to finish this puppy up by the end of November. I think I have two chapters left, at which point I’ll be putting out a brief call for beta readers before the book is handed off to JoSelle Vanderhooft for formal editing. Those of you who backed my Kickstarter have gotten a longer, more detailed update about this!

Groundwork continues to be laid as well for getting the Bone Walker soundtrack ready. My belovedest Dara, rock star that she is, has thrown together a bunch of practice tracks of the various tunes we’re interested in for the instrumental sets, so that we can start learning how to play them the way she’s envisioning they should sound. It’s going to be exciting, and I’ve got a LOT of tunes I’m going to have to learn how to play really fast. This is what happens when an author is also a musician, you guys!

And, artist Kiri Moth (may her PhotoShop always swiftly load! May her pencils be ever sharp!) has sent me an initial sketch for the soundtrack’s cover art! Check it out!

So, lots of stuff still going on, and I’m hoping to finish the year strong–and with another finished book to show for it. Hopefully I won’t be flung any more health surprises. Wish me luck, folks!

Rebels of Adalonia, Valor of the Healer, Vengeance of the Hunter

Trilogy titles announcement!

With the agreement of myself, my agent, my editor, and the rest of the team at Carina Press, we now have final titles for my trilogy!

As of RIGHT NOW, the book formerly known as Lament of the Dove shall be henceforth referred to as Valor of the Healer!

Book 2, formerly Shadow of the Rook, becomes Vengeance of the Hunter.

Book 3, formerly Lone Hawk’s Flight, will be Victory of the Hawk.

And the series title over all will be Rebels of Adalonia.

I’m feeling quite happy about these titles over all, especially for Book 1, since that very nicely captures the whole character arc I’m doing with Faanshi in that part of the story. And I like the alliteration of the V and H words in each title.

I’ve been asked this on Google+, so I’ll go ahead and note here that the title changes were brought about for two reasons. One, because ‘Lament’ was determined to not really fit Faanshi’s character arc. This was in fact something that beta readers had brought up to me (and did I mention, YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME LIKE THAT), so when Carina raised the issue, it wasn’t surprising to me at all. Two, because ‘Dove’ was thought to be kind of questionable for the fantasy market. This, too, wasn’t really surprising. I also had a beta reader note to me that they felt that ‘Lament of the Dove’ actually sounded like a Western! And on a related note, especially given that a lot of Carina’s buying audience is coming out of the romance genre, I could also see people thinking ‘Dove’ has connotations of inspiration romance–which is definitely not what I’m writing.

So! Valor of the Healer it is. I get to make appropriate changes in the copyedit pass I need to do this weekend! And y’all be on the lookout for this to get incorporated into info right here on my site as well as in upcoming announcements as they happen!

The Dove, the Rook, and the Hawk take flight with Carina Press!

I’ve been flinging this news around under the radar for a while via offline channels, and dropping hints about it in online channels. Now, though, the time has come to make a formal announcement!

Ladies and gentlemen, my high fantasy trilogy, The Dove, the Rook, and the Hawk, will be published starting in 2013 by Carina Press!

This, O Internets, was the other half of the Big Writing News I’ve had this year (the first half of which was the news that I am now represented by Miriam Kriss of the Irene Goodman Literary Agency)! I’ve been sitting on this as long as I have, to give things time to mature enough that it’s clear that we’ll be moving forward. And now that things have done, here you go! How excited am I? SERIOUSLY EXCITED.

Here are various important questions about this deal, and their answers!

You said something earlier this year about a pen name! Does this mean you’re using one?

Yes! The Dove, the Rook, and the Hawk will be published under the name Angela Highland. The main reason for this is that while my actual name is certainly unique, it’s also difficult to spell correctly. In particular, the apostrophe, coupled with the fact that the T that comes after it is actually lowercase, has always been a problem for me and Dara. Many, many automated systems take one look at “Korra’ti” and promptly explode, mangling the name in the process.

Also, even people who have known Dara and me all our adult lives have issues spelling our name. So it is the consensus of my agent, my new editors at Carina, and myself that using a more user-friendly surname will be wiser in general, when it comes to attracting new readers.

With that in mind, my official writing site will continue to be accessible via angelakorrati.com, but the domain name angelahighland.com is also now live and redirects to angelakorrati.com as well. I have development plans in progress for a new site, and when that goes live, I’ll be flipping the domains around and making angelahighland.com the canonical one.

Where did you get the name Highland from?

It’s my original surname! It seemed a fairly safe and obvious choice, especially given that I have yet to find a single active author using that as a name.

When will the first book be out?

Book 1 of the trilogy is currently slated for release in April 2013, with Books 2 and 3 to be scheduled as I can deliver them.

While its current working title remains Lament of the Dove, you should all expect a different final title. One of the issues that got brought up by my beta readers surfaced again when Carina made me the formal offer, which is to say, the term ‘Lament’ no longer really fits Faanshi’s character arc. So we’ll be swapping that out for a better word. More on this as events warrant.

If you’re going to be published via Carina, does this mean you will be in digital form only?

Yes, for the time being. Carina is primarily a digital imprint, though a few of their best-selling titles have been released in paperback. Note however that those titles to date have been romance titles. To the best of my knowledge, whether or not my trilogy hits print will depend upon how well it sells. So if you have a vested interest in seeing Faanshi, Julian, and Kestar in print as well as electronic format, this is me asking you in advance to be prepared to encourage everybody within range to buy the books!

Carina is however a Significant Deal when it comes to ebooks. They’ve been around a couple years now, and since they have the muscle of Harlequin’s marketing engine behind them, this means I will reliably be on all major ebook-selling sites and that my reach to online audiences will be considerably extended! Which is awesome, ’cause I suck at marketing. *^_^*;;

Did you say romance? Wait, why did you sell a fantasy trilogy to a romance publisher?

Because Carina actually publishes all genres. Their fantasy selection is so far pretty small, but I’m very eager to add to that list, and I encourage all of you to consider giving all of their fantasy and science fiction titles a chance, so’s to encourage them to do more!

Also, much of their SF/F does have a foot in romance in general–you’ll notice that several of their titles have a strong romantic plot to them as well. This actually fits in with what I write, i.e., fantasy with romantic elements. (And later, as I’m able to pursue other stories bubbling around in my brain, SF with romantic elements as well.)

What does this mean for the works you’re doing for your Kickstarter?

As I have already apprised all of my Kickstarter backers, this will slow me down somewhat delivering Bone Walker and the two scheduled novellas to people who supported that project. However, this does not, repeat, NOT mean I am abandoning those works. I’m hoping to be able to still deliver the remaining works involved with the Kickstarter by the end of this year, and will be working on them as much as I can in between doing the edits on Lament through the rest of this summer and fall.

The Warder universe works will continue to be published under the name Angela Korra’ti. Which means that yes, I’m going to have two active pen names at the same time. Think of them as alternate universe versions of me. Or perhaps different regenerations! (However, it’s safe to assume that both versions of me are raving fangirls for Newfoundland and Quebecois music!)

What else can you tell us?

Oh, I’m sure there will be more news to come, but for right now these are the high points! I am looking hugely and I mean HUGELY forward to having Faanshi, Kestar, and Julian take their places alongside Kendis and Christopher’s crowd, so that you all can see their stories as well!

Those of you who RPed with me on AetherMUSH back in the day will certainly recall that Faanshi and Julian were my primary characters there. They have been heavily altered for this storyline, but that they’ve stayed with me all this time and demanded I give them a proper story is a testament to the strength of the environment in which they were born. Y’all may rest assured that Aether, and in particular Astra Poyser, will figure prominently in the Acknowledgements and Dedication sections of these books!

And that’s it for the time being! So if anyone has questions I haven’t covered here, drop me a comment and let me know!
