Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #1 has DROPPED!

Leaves on the Wind

Leaves on the Wind

My fellow Browncoats, most if not all of you will know about this already. But for those of you who didn’t, be advised that Dark Horse Comics loves us and wants us to be happy.

Because behold: the first issue of the new Serenity: Leaves on the Wind series is out!

It should surprise exactly ZERO persons reading this that I bought the hell out of that as soon as I saw the link show up in my email. And when I got home tonight, I happily slurped the issue itself down onto my iPad. Picoreview: gorram hell it’s deeply, deeply shiny to see these characters again. 😀

The art’s acceptable, by which I mean everyone is recognizable. The overall style is nicely gritty without being blatant and distracting me from the actual story. And the story–well! It’s kicking in not long after the events of the movie, and we’re seeing straight out of the gate that the revelation of what happened on Miranda is NOT going over well to the general public. The Alliance is now looking very, VERY hard for the crew of our favorite Firefly-class freighter. And so is the ragtag brand new resistance group forming, who’ve gotten it into their heads that Malcolm Reynolds should be their leader. I can hear Mal facepalming from here, you guys.

Which is all I’m going to say about it, at least in this main post. I call open season on spoilers in the comments, though–so if you’ve read it and you want to squee, COME RIGHT IN and let your Browncoat flags fly!

Great Big Sea

A LOT of visitors coming by to read about Sean McCann

I’ve had a massive uptick lately in people hitting my three previous posts about Sean McCann leaving GBS, here and here and here. And what I’m sensing here is quite a few people who might perhaps be looking for answers as to why exactly Sean bailed on the band–and what Great Big Sea’s fate will be now that he’s out.

On the latter question, there has still been no formal announcement through official GBS channels. I’ve seen nothing posted on the site’s news page, and nothing’s come across the newsletter either. The most official thing I’ve seen on the matter is Alan Doyle’s most recent post to his personal blog, From the Road, which you can see on the Great Big Sea site here or on Alan’s site here. Alan basically says that the band is on hiatus again, and goes into some detail about what he, Bob, Murray, and Kris are up to. He does also mention Sean’s leaving, that Sean is about to release a new CD (today, in fact, as of this writing, up on his bandcamp page), and that he wishes him well.

Sean himself in the meantime has started talking to the media. So if you haven’t seen it already, an interview he did on the matter is over here. He’s saying pretty much what I expected, which is to say, creative differences. And he, like much of the fanbase, is going a bit “buh?” at the silence on greatbigsea.com about his departure.

‘Cause yeah, you’d think they’d have issued some sort of formal announcement by now. o.O

But, be that as it may, I’ll continue to relay any news I come across. If you’re on Facebook, you might consider dropping by the OKP group there since that’s become the more or less de facto replacement for the OKP forums that used to be on the Great Big Sea site. This is where I’m getting my most recent news. You can find that group here.

Vengeance of the Hunter

Cover reveal for Vengeance of the Hunter!

We are now at the stage of the game where Carina’s cover team presents to me the cover art for Vengeance of the Hunter, Book 2 of the Rebels of Adalonia trilogy!

Y’all keep in mind that while my trilogy is high fantasy, I am having it published via an imprint with its roots in romance–so that tends to show up in the marketing. Which means, I get me a shirtless cover model this time around. But even given that: I’m really rather digging the color scheme, and especially the raven. Because it’s ever so appropriate for my boy Julian, a.k.a. the Rook, a.k.a. one of the most infamous assassins in the entire realm of Adalonia, around whom the main character development focuses in this forthcoming book.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the cover for Vengeance of the Hunter!

Gift card ebook roundup post

The book-buying gods have smiled upon me, for lo, I received not only a B&N gift card for my birthday, I also got a VISA gift card from work for hitting my five-year mark with them. I took the latter over to a B&N to get myself a gift card loaded up with that card’s balance (after nabbing a copy of the soundtrack for Desolation of Smaug). Which means, of course, a tasty, tasty book roundup post!

Nabbed therefore from B&N:

  • The Splendour Falls, by Susanna Kearsley. For general “I buy everything by Susanna Kearsley” reasons, and this is one of her older books I haven’t managed to read yet. I have a paperback copy, but I buy her in both formats, and this is the first this ebook’s finally been made available to US markets.
  • What Remains of Heaven and Where Shadows Dance, by C.S. Harris. Books 5 and 6 of her Sebastian St. Cyr historical mystery series.
  • To Darkness and to Death, All Mortal Flesh, and I Shall Not Want, by Julia Spencer-Fleming. Books 4, 5, and 6 of her Clare Fergusson/Russ Van Alstyne mystery series.
  • Magic Bleeds, by Ilona Andrews. Book 4 of the Kate Daniels urban fantasy series.

7 for the year so far.

Movies

Movie review: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Extended Edition

One of the things I just got for my birthday was the Blu-Ray of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Edition, which I saved until tonight to watch–because one does not simply commit to a three-hour Peter Jackson epic on a school night! So we watched it tonight, and lo, it was lovely.

There are, according to Wikipedia, 13 extra minutes of footage in this version. And for the most part, I think almost every minute actually helped the movie considerably. Dara and I are in agreement that they improved the pacing of the film by providing a better balance between the battle bits and the slower bits. And I was particularly pleased to see some extra detail in the prelude that sets up the backstory between Thranduil and the dwarves.

There are additional songs, which I mostly liked as giving a bigger tie to the book, with one notable exception. And by and large, I did quite like the extra footage in Rivendell.

Details behind the fold! Mind where you’re digging for spoilers!

ETA: Here’s Dara’s commentary as well!

The Murkworks

2014, this is going on your performance review

Yesterday afternoon, Dara IMed me at work to let me know that she had to go see the eye doctor immediately, because she was experiencing a new round of symptoms consistent with the retinal tearing she’s been plagued with for the last couple of months. Both of us essentially went “well, shit“, and I told Dara to keep me updated. She quickly got the confirmation: yep, third round of retinal tearing, the third of the three spots that had been found in her eye.

So I cancelled the chiropractor appointment I’d made for today. And more annoyingly, I cancelled our hotel reservation for Conflikt next week. Because a new round of eye surgery means that Dara has to be weirdly positioned for another week, and well, we can’t do that shit at a hotel.

AUGH.

Anyway. As I’ve been posting on the social networks this morning, we got up at stupid-o’clock to report to Swedish for the procedure. It went okay, and at least this time, the tear was a bit smaller than the others. I’m to take her in for 24-hours-after followup tomorrow morning. Until then she’s to remain facedown, but once she’s confirmed to be okay, she should be able to go onto her left side for this coming week.

We’ve rather gotten this down to a science at this point so yeah, we’ll get through this. But it’s fucking irritating that we have to, especially given that this is the second time we’ve had to cancel plans to go to a convention.

And goddamnit, my birthday is coming up, and “a fresh round of medical crap”, I assure you, was NOT ON THE LIST OF THINGS I WANTED. I mean, honestly, 2014, we couldn’t at least have gotten out of January before dealing with another round of this?

Though I suppose I can’t bitch too loudly; it could be worse. It could have been late February, shooting my plans for music in Canada out from under me. WHICH I AM STILL GOING TO, come hell, high water, or zombie apocalypse.

For now though, now that we’ve gotten Dara safely home from the procedure, I’m going to take a nap. Because five hours of sleep is guh tired now zzzzzz.

About Me

Help me out here, Internets

I’ve been bitching about this on the social networks, so a lot of you know this already–but here’s a post on the general theme of It’s Official, Surgically Enforced Early Menopause Sucks. By which I mean, the vicious hot flashes that’ve been swamping me for the last few weeks. My sleep’s been shot to hell, and I’ve been waking up at least three or four times a night.

Which has meant I’ve been pretty much thrashed, physically and mentally. I’ve been just functional enough to keep making it to work, but not much besides that, including getting any decent progress done on the writing or music. It’s very hard to write a book when you have an inner dragon doing this.

What Hot Flashes Feel Like

What Hot Flashes Feel Like

So what have I been doing about this? A few things.

One, I’ve been horribly snorky lately as well, so at Dara’s recommendation I’ve been hitting some first-generation antihistamines before going to bed. Specifically, the stuff in Benadryl, diphenhydramine.

Two, at the recommendation of my massage therapist, I’ve been taking an adrenal supplement to get my system to stand down out of crisis mode (due to having to recover from surgery), and decrease the amount of cortisol running through me.

Three, most significantly, reading around on the Internets (and in particular, skimming the forums on hystersisters.com) pointed me to references about how it’s common for Asian women to not have hot flashes nearly so badly, due to high-soy diets. I deemed this as requiring immediate investigation–and discovered, after ordering a tofu dish from the Chinese place near our house, that two nights’ worth of using that dish as dinner tamped down the hot flashes HARD.

I have since been able to replicate this with another tofu dish, and am therefore now deploying an emergency soy surge to my diet for the next few weeks until my scheduled physical with my primary care doc, and my followup with my oncologist as well. We’ll be discussing a proper game plan for dealing with these symptoms, as well as whether dietary changes are a feasible plan long-term.

For now though I’ve got some soymilk for putting on cereal and into my tea, as well as some soy-based yogurt. And I’ve been having miso in the morning AND in the evening. It’s helping. It scales down my inner dragon to this.

Really, the Dragon Just Wants a Soy Smoothie

Either way, Internets, this is where YOU all come in. Tell me about your favorite tofu recipes! What are interesting things to do to tofu?

Also tell me about your favorite soy-based snacks as well! And thank you all in advance for any pointers!
