Forwarding this on behalf of Eric Andrews-Katz, mentioned below. If you think this might be your cup of tea, follow the link he provides over to information about his anthology!

Howdy,

Please find below an Open Call for submission for both Writers and Artists/comics/photographers for the new anthology, Gay City. Vol. 4 – At Second Glance. Please feel free to pass this on to anyone you might think is interested and if there are any community boards that it can be posted on, that would be very much appreciated. I’ve included an on-line link for your convenience.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Eric Andrews-Katz

At Second Glance

Open Call for Submissions: Gay City: Volume 4-At Second Glance ~Familiar stories from different views

Edited by: Eric Andrews-Katz & Vincent Kovar

Gay City’s Mission is to promote the health of gay/bisexual men and prevent HIV transmission by building community, fostering communication, and nurturing self-esteem. This year, our anthology series continues with volume 4: At Second Glance.

There are always at least two viewpoints of every story and yet, we usually only hear one side. In the tradition of WICKED, The Red Tent and The Mists of Avalon, a different perspective can provide an entirely different story than the commonly known tale; the other side of the looking glass, so to speak. You are encouraged to experiment with sexual and cultural norms, technology and historical events. Sensuality is fine, but please no erotica.

Hurray! I met Rachel Caine!

And now for today’s major reason I was happy to avert the threat of the bug from work: userinforachelcaine had a reading tonight at Third Place Books. As I’ve been a fan of her Weather Warden books for a while and as Third Place is literally right down the hill from my house, I pretty much had to show up for this. Never mind that the actual reading was for the latest Morganville Vampire book and that I’m way behind on those; I showed up anyway, just for the awesome.

userinfojennygriffee showed up as well, since she knows Rachel better than I do and even had the pleasure of rooming with her at a Harry Potter convention a few years back–and, she’s in the dedication of one of the Weather Warden books. So we both said hi to Rachel and got hugs and a bit of chatting, and each of us had a few books signed; I decided to bring the first one of each of her series, the Weather Wardens, the Morganvilles, and the Outcast Seasons. She wrote nice things in each of them, for me!

Yay! Rachel Caine Thinks I'm Awesome!

We were charmed as well that an older gentleman ahead of us in the line was attending the reading on behalf of his college-age daughter, who he said was a big fan of Rachel’s work and who was very put out that she was in New York and missing her first reading in the Pacific Northwest ever. He got Jenny to take his picture with Rachel to send to his daughter, which was awesome.

And Rachel told some awesome little anecdotes, including how that excellent userinfojimbutcher quote on the first Weather Warden book came from Jim not even realizing that the book was hers–and they’d known each other already for quite some time, he just hadn’t realized that particular pen name was her! Lulz.

She gave out shiny things to all the people in the line, and there were apparently shinier things she was going to give to anybody who’d shown up with the whole Morganville series. I didn’t see what shiny swag that involved, since I’m behind on buying those! But what she gave out was pretty shiny, a big bookmark that changes images when you change what angle you hold it, and an Official Morganville Resident ID Card.

All in all it was a lovely little way to blow an hour. We left quickly, because the author herself had to get back to her hotel room–she has a book due tomorrow, the next MV installment, and she had 10K to go! She’s been jamming in all of the writing on this thing on the last several stops on her tour. I gotta say, for a woman on a reading tour and working in crunch mode on her next manuscript, she was looking pretty authorial, too.

Props as always to Third Place for their lovely little author events. I’ll have to scamper back down there on Tuesday as well for userinfocmpriest!

Zoe Archer, you have my Attention

So the fine ladies over at Smart Bitches have been doing a book club thing lately, and their latest title is Scoundrel, by Zoe Archer. They posted about it this morning, and as soon as I saw the blurb and the cover, I knew I was going to have to read it. To wit:

Scoundrel (The Blades of The Rose, #2)

And okay, yeah, the fact that this guy is dressed like he mugged Malcolm Reynolds or perhaps Brendan Fraser’s character from The Mummy is going a long way to making him Relevant to My Interests, but really? More importantly? The simple fact that this dude is in fact DRESSED makes him infinitely sexier to me than all of the over-muscled tattooed guys wielding oversized swords that seem to be all over paranormal romance covers these days.

Plus, the plot sounds like great fun. As y’all know I’m in the middle of a massive Amelia Peabody re-read, and this fits in beautifully with that, with the promise of Historical And Also Paranormal Awesome. I have already yoinked a sample of this book down onto the Nookronomicon, just to see if the writing does in fact deliver on the promise of Awesome.

And I’m also swinging back to check out Book 1, whose cover hero apparently mugged Indiana Jones. ;>

Contests

Aether Age anthology and Hadley Rille 5K contest!

I just mentioned this on my personal blog, but it’s worth mentioning here: my fellow Outer Alliance member Brandon Bell is the editor of what promises to be a fun anthology, The Aether Age: Helios. You should go over and pre-order it, not only because it sounds fun, but also because its publisher, Hadley Rille Books, is having a contest to try to reach their goal of selling 5,000 books!

They’ll be giving away a Kindle 3G in January to a randomly selected entrant. You can sign up according to the instructions here, and you can get additional entries in the contest if you pre-order the aforementioned anthology or order anything else in their catalog. I just got emailed by one of their staff as well who says he’ll give me another entry for spreading the word, so I encourage interested parties to consider doing the same.

Because hey, books are shiny, and so are Kindles. Go to, folks! 🙂

Drollerie Press, Other People's Books

Some potential Awesome

Courtesy of userinfoupstart_crow, I hear tell of a forthcoming anthology that involves the words “lesbian” and “steampunk”. I do believe I shall have to check this out, and if I can score a review ARC, I will totally be bumping it up to the top of my reading queue.

More details over here!

Oh, and while I’m on the topic of queer anthologies, it also behooves me to plug Drollerie Press’ own forthcoming queer antho Hellebore and Rue. Aptly enough, userinfoupstart_crow is involved in the editing of that as well!

Details on Hellebore and Rue are over here.

Events

Random Publicity Week

Author Darcy Pattison had a lovely idea, or so I learned on the Twitternets: Random Publicity Week, encouraging all of us to take the time to do that Goodreads or Amazon or B&N review to support books by our friends and fellow authors. You know how this works: you’ve been swearing up and down you’d do that, right? Now is your chance! From today until the 10th, I encourage you all to commit random acts of publicity to support other people’s books that you love!

Today, I’m going to take the time to plug a post by J.C. Hutchins, the author of 7th Son, who in turn plugged a novel that has come to life under bittersweet circumstances. He posts very eloquently over here about his close friend Zellie Blake, a young woman who’s recently lost a fight with cancer. Her friends have pooled resources to publish her novel Lightning Strikes via Lulu, to raise money for cancer research.

As many of you know, I’ve gone a few rounds with cancer myself. So this is a random act of publicity that’s actually a little less random for me personally, and more, well, y’know, meaningful. So go check out Mr. Hutchins’ post, and if you’re moved to do so, consider buying the book. Cancer fighters like me will appreciate it very much.
