Ebook geekery of the week: footnotes in EPUBs

So as per my last post I’ve been amusing myself with throwing together an ebook edition of The Starblade of Radmynn, one of the first two novels I ever wrote. (Specifically, the later one of that name, which was actually set chronologically earlier.) One of the things I’m doing with this file is adding footnotes to the text, calling out things like “this character is an early edition of a character that showed up later in the Rebels of Adalonia” or “this nation actually had its name changed because of X and Y” and such.

But in the course of dealing with this, I discovered to my vexation EPUB has erratic support for footnotes.

I’ve seen them in ebooks I have in my own library–the ebook edition of The Lord of the Rings, for example, is packing a whole hell of a lot of ’em. But they’re all stuck at the end of the ebook file, and you have to tap on the footnote to go to it and then try to get back to where you were previously in the text. If the ebook isn’t set up smoothly enough, this can be problematic.

EPUB3 has better support–it actually includes support for popup notes, so that if you see a footnote marker on something, you can just tap on it and a little bubble will pop up and show you the note. Then you can dismiss it.

I’ve seen contradictory references, though, as to whether the major ebook vendors are actually properly supporting this. iBooks is referenced a lot as doing so, but I’m not seeing anything definitive re: whether the Nook or Kobo does. Complicating the matter is that a) I’m also seeing data that suggests that Smashwords only supports EPUB2, and b) right now, the tool I have available to me for generating EPUBs, i.e., Calibre, doesn’t talk EPUB3 either. Calibre’s creator is on record as saying he’s not particularly interested in developing EPUB3 support, although he’s held the door open for other devs to do so.

So now, I’m thinking I need to figure out if I want to play further with EPUB3, just for the sake of teaching myself something. In which case I’ll need a tool capable of generating an EPUB3 file. And I’ll need to figure out whether it’s possible to do footnotes in a way that’s backward compatible with readers that don’t talk EPUB3. This will be interesting to explore!

I know a lot of writers swear by Scrivener, and Scrivener has EPUB support. But I’m not convinced I want to bring in a tool of its magnitude just to solve a single problem. I also know a handful of authors who use InDesign to generate their books, but again, not entirely convinced I want to jump to a tool of that magnitude. More likely, I will be investigating reports that Sigil has woken up again–it’s the EPUB editor that Calibre slurped into its own code base. And there’s an EPUB3 plugin for Sigil.

More data on this as events warrant. Any indie authors care to comment on what tools you use to build your books?

Faerie Blood sales numbers to date

Earlier this month author Kameron Hurley posted this writeup of what an author can reasonably expect in terms of sales numbers throughout the lifetime of a book. It’s interesting reading and I recommend it, just on general principles of managing your expectations if you’re trying to get something published.

Now, mind you, she’s focusing on traditional publishing on this post. But she refers to a couple of numbers I want to call out that are of particular interest to me. This:

The average book sells 3000 copies in its lifetime (Publishers Weekly, 2006).

And also this:

The average traditionally published book which sells 3,000 in its entire lifetime in print only sells about 250-300 copies its first year.

Now let me throw you a couple of numbers for Faerie Blood, which is hands down my best-selling title to date.

I do not have complete and accurate numbers for sales of Faerie Blood‘s Drollerie Press edition, given that I was never given a complete accounting of all the sales I’m pretty sure it made. My best estimates are that between 2009 and 2011, it scored somewhere between 300 and 500 sales.

Faerie Blood‘s second edition, released to public sale following my 2012 Kickstarter, is closing in on the 1,000 sales mark as of this writing. My spreadsheet that I use to track sales currently has a total of 932 sales in it.

This means that overall, since its original release in 2009, Faerie Blood has achieved somewhere between 1,200 and 1,500 sales.

Which in turn means that it has achieved somewhere around the vicinity of half the sales that a traditionally published book can expect in its lifetime.

And so far, I’m still regularly selling copies. Since Faerie Blood‘s second edition release, I have not gone a single month without selling at least one copy on Amazon.com. And sometime in the next few months, maybe even before the end of the year, it’s very plausible that I will hit the 1,000 sales mark for the second edition all by itself.

Would I have done better if I’d chosen to pursue traditional publishing with this book? Possibly. Possibly not. But I am very grateful that the book’s done as well as it has, particularly as a self-published title. Many thanks to all who have bought it, and who continue to support it by spreading the word to friends and/or posting reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. It’s numbers like these that encourage me to continue carving out my tiny little space in the vast world of online publishing–because, slowly but surely, y’all are finding my stories.

And I hope you’ll stick around for more.

Forthcoming goodie for you all this week

The first two novels I ever wrote were things I wrote in middle school and high school. They were both called The Starblade of Radmynn because I sucked at coming up with titles back then. BUT, they are also the oldest surviving complete books I have, and they serve as the forerunners for the Rebels of Adalonia books.

And I’m going to make one of them available for download right here on my site. The later Starblade was actually written to be a prequel to the first Starblade, so when I put this up for you it’ll actually be The Starblade of Radmynn I. (I’ll do Starblade II later.)

Fair warning that oh god yes these do indeed read like they were written by a teenager. But they are rather precious to me as some of the earliest examples of my writing, and I thought it would be fun to make them available, maybe with some annotations. Because I was quite amused by Jim Hines’ annotating and MSTing his own first novel, and I figure if Hines can do it, what the hell, I’ll put the two Starblades up for you all to giggle over too. Plus I want to experiment with doing popup footnotes in an ebook, and this would be a fun way for me to learn how to do those.

I’m not going to actually deploy them out to the ebook vendors I sell through, because these aren’t things I want to try to sell. And I’m not going to try to get cover art for them either, since I’m not going to try to sell them. But if I see any interest I may consider adapting them into serious, legit prequels for the Rebels books!

So be on the lookout for Starblade I coming to my site some time this week. Featuring an amnesia plot and a telepathic unicorn. Because OF COURSE IT DOES. ;D

Bilingual Lord of the Rings Reread

LotR Reread: The Fellowship of the Ring: Chapter 4: A Short Cut to Mushrooms

Chapter 4 of The Fellowship of the Ring, I’ll say straight up, doesn’t actually accomplish much for me in the bigger picture of the story. And it’s not a chapter I’m sad to see edited down into near non-existence in the movie.

We have Frodo, Sam, and Pippin having a rather roundabout discussion after the elves, and then several paragraphs of them setting out cross-country. There’s some discussion of the Black Riders, again rather roundabout. And when they reach Farmer Maggot’s farm, we get the backstory of why exactly Frodo’s wary of crossing that particular hobbit’s land. They stay over with Farmer Maggot for a bit, eat dinner with his family, and have a bit more discussion about the Black Riders before finally setting off for the Bucklebury Ferry.

The conversation the hobbits have at the beginning of the chapter is mostly useful for establishing that Frodo is already feeling very ambivalent about bringing anybody with him on this trip–which, okay, yeah, fair call on his part. And it does lead to a bit of early nice character development on Sam’s part, where he gets to process his own reactions to meeting the elves. In particular, we see Sam being surprisingly insightful about what’s to come for him:

“I don’t know how to say it, but after last night I feel different. I seem to see ahead, in a kind of way. I know we are going to take a very long road, into darkness; but I know I can’t turn back. It isn’t to see Elves now, nor dragons, nor mountains, that I want–I don’t rightly know what I want: but I have something to do before the end, and it lies ahead, not in the Shire.”

Oh Sam, dear Sam, you have no idea.

This is really the only interesting bit of character development for me in this part of the chapter, though. Frodo’s ambivalent and Pippin is young and frivolous, but both of these things are things we knew already.

Likewise, we already had the idea that the Riders were looking for Frodo, so the whole stop at Farmer Maggot’s house seems less than useful to me as well. There’s a reference to the Rider Farmer Maggot saw as a “black fellow”, which, while perhaps literally true, is still nonetheless a highly unfortunate word choice when it comes to describing one of your villains. At least to my modern eyes, as opposed to the eyes of readers in Tolkien’s day. And maybe even then.

And we have the second female character who gets any lines in the story: Farmer Maggot’s wife, who has exactly one line of dialogue, and who doesn’t get a name. Farmer Maggot also has sons and daughters, as actually seems perfectly appropriate for a farming family–lots of young hobbits to work the land. None of the Maggot offspring get any lines, though.

I do at least like the backstory of why Frodo is nervous about crossing Maggot’s land, anyway. I.e., his history of having stolen mushrooms from Maggot as a lad, and how the farmer threatened him with his dogs. It only occurs to me now, as I write this, that there’s no indication that hobbits keep small dogs. So if you assume that Farmer Maggot’s dogs are the big, healthy sort of working dog you’d expect to be on a farm in real life, that size of dog would be rather more intimidating to somebody the size of a hobbit.

And it is, admittedly, a bit of a giggle that Farmer Maggot does in fact give them mushrooms for the road.

What’s more important to me at the end of this chapter, though, is that Merry finally shows up. Which means we’ll finally have all four of the plot-relevant hobbits on camera! But, frustratingly, we still won’t pick up the pace quite yet. More on that in the next post, for Chapter 5!

  • Chapelwood, by Cherie Priest. Already bought in ebook, but Priest IS on my list of “people I want in both formats”! And also, see previous commentary re: Lizzie Borden taking an axe to Cthulhu. 😀
  • A Red-Rose Chain, by Seanan McGuire. Her latest October Daye novel, and since I’m finally starting to get caught up on these, I figured I should go ahead and buy the new one while I’m at it! Let it also be said that I really like the cover on this one, both for color scheme and for how the woman in the picture a) is facing forward and b) has a HEAD. But Chris McGrath’s art is consistently excellent that way, and I like seeing his interpretations of Toby as much as I’ve liked seeing his interpretations of Harry Dresden and Harper Blaine!

Picked up electronically from Amazon:

  • Dark Beyond the Stars. SF anthology, with all female authors. Grabbed this on general principles after seeing this post on the Mary Sue, describing how a troll in the Amazon reviews of this anthology took it upon himself to deride women writing SF. All signs point to this chucklehead doing it on purpose to try to draw attention to his own book, to wit, ugh. I’m not going to bother to name him; you can figure it out for yourself if you care, if you dig through the comments on the post. Me, I’d rather call attention to the antho, which I grabbed in no small part because Julie Czerneda did the intro on it and I DO love me some Czerneda. The ebook is an Amazon-only release, unfortunately, and the print edition is through CreateSpace–which is also Amazon. So if you care about either of those things but still want to support the anthology, you might consider contacting the publisher and asking if they’ll do a non-Amazon release.

Picked up electronically from Kobo:

  • Binti, by Nnedi Okorafor. SF. Novella released directly by tor.com, which I’m snagging out of general interest in increasing the presence of writers of color AND protagonists of color in my library, and also because the concept sounds awesome.
  • Demon Fare, by Cory Dale. Urban fantasy. Snagged this because of having featured it on Boosting the Signal!
  • City of Pearl and Crossing the Line, by Karen Traviss. SF. Books 1 and 2 of her Wess’har Wars series. I read Book 1 ages ago and quite liked it, and kept meaning to continue the series. Rebuy of both in ebook since they’re currently available for $3.99 each.
  • By Hook or By Crook, by Eleri Stone. Steampunk romance. Snagged this because Eleri is a fellow member of the Here Be Magic blog! But also because I LOVE her cover. Her heroine has a HEAD. And she’s actually LOOKING AT THE READER. AND! I love that “excuse me?” look on her face, as if she’s just lifted up her goggles to get a better look at whatever damnfool thing has just been done in her presence. Probably by the hero. ;D This? This is a cover that makes me want to learn more about who this person is, and what her story is. For bonus awesome, it’s currently available for 99 cents!

“What I really want is peace across Serescine. It would be magnificent to avoid all these ridiculous, costly wars.” From the second floor balcony, Zavin watched the sun slip below the horizon, painting the sky orange. The day’s heat would break soon and he’d leave the palace to wander the city streets in disguise for a few hours.

His lover rested a delicate ochre hand on his shoulder, her gold bangle bracelets clinking together. The smooth silk of her flame-red dress teased his dark skin and he gripped his olivewood staff tighter to avoid temptation. Its topaz crystal pulsed with dim light to echo his concentration.

“My husband–”

“Must you call him that in my bedroom?” He glanced over his shoulder with a scowl and found Mahdis smirking at him.

“Caliph Korval has proven receptive to your ideas so far. There’s nothing to worry about.” She slid behind him and kissed the bare skin between his shoulder blades.

“There’s always something to worry about.” At the moment, he worried about losing track of time in the throes of indulgence and passion. “The path ahead will have Korval taking the mantle of Sultan. Many things need to be prepared for that to become a reality.”

“Are you sure it can be done? There hasn’t been a sultan for a long time.”

“Of course I’m sure. I’ve devoted years of my life to setting this in motion. Korval will be the Sultan and I’ll be his right hand, ready to step in should an assassin ever manage to penetrate his security.”

Mahdis chuckled. “I’m sure that would never happen.”

Zavin bared his teeth in a feral grin. “No, of course not. There will be peace across Serescine, no matter how many lives I have to spend to make it so.”

Album review: Maison de bois, by Nicolas Boulerice

I have written upon many occasions about Le Vent du Nord, and in particular about how every single one of those boys ranks very high on my list of musicians for whom I’ll buy ANYTHING they produce. And I would do this no matter what was on those albums. Olivier Demers accorde son violon? I’d buy that! Quarante-cinq minutes de la basse de Réjean Brunet? Gimme! Simon Beaudry chante dans le douche? Sign me the HELL up.

Given my documented partiality, therefore, it’ll surprise exactly none of you that I jumped all over Nicolas Boulerice’s new solo release, Maison de bois.

If you know Le Vent du Nord, you know that M. Boulerice is the lead singer, hurdy-gurdy player, and piano player. If you’ve seen my prior album and show reviews for this band, you know in particular that he is a master of the hurdy-gurdy, and provoked my Dara into using the phrase “bitchin’ metal hurdy-gurdy solo”. The rich character of his voice and his dynamic hurdy-gurdy playing are a huge part of Le Vent’s overall sound, and therefore a huge part of what cemented my fandom of them in the first place.

It is important to note straight up, though, that you should not expect Maison de bois to sound like a Le Vent du Nord album.

Prior Le Vent releases do hint at what you’ll find on this album, mind you. On Tromper le temps, there’s a track called “Dans les cachots” that gives you a very good preview of the overall flavor of Maison de bois: Nico’s vocals standing on their own, with a stark, emotive aspect to them that a singer of traditional music doesn’t necessarily always have a chance to display, especially if he’s in a band renowned for being upbeat and lively. I’m still enough of a beginner at French that I can’t follow his lyrics without seeing them written out (and I’m not seeing lyrics on Nico’s Bandcamp page, drat), but I can tell you that the songs we get in this release are introspective and thoughtful of tone. I can easily imagine them sung in a smoky nightclub in a noir film.

Instrumentally, we have no hurdy-gurdy here. But we do have plenty of piano, and like the vocals, the piano aims for an overall introspective timbre. Which is not to say it’s understated–because as with the singing, the piano covers a broad range of expression, from quiet, delicate accents to more powerful chords. Other instruments from the backup musicians make appearances as well: some light percussion, a bit of bass, even a nicely muted trumpet on “Avec toi” (which is I think the song that sounded most to me like it should be sung in a smoky nightclub).

The backup vocals are likewise lightly handled. Accustomed as they are to hearing Nico singing with the Le Vent boys, my ears found it a bit odd to hear him harmonizing with a woman–but Mia Lacroix’s voice blended beautifully with his, and so her presence on the album stood out the most for me among the backup musicians in the credits on the Bandcamp page.

Overall, if you’re a Le Vent fan, this album is definitely required listening, just so that you can get a true sense of what Nicolas Boulerice is capable of with his vocals. It’s a refreshing change of pace, albeit one best suited for when you want your music to be moody and quiet. Because as much as I love Le Vent du Nord’s skill at making me want to get up and dance (or play!), sometimes I just want to kick back and listen. And this release has much to reward a thoughtful listener.
