Fun stuff indeed. Not sure if you spotted it while you were there or were told about it, but notice the smokestack to the upper right of the main Sunken Garden pic? That’s the one remnant of the old quarry there, far as I know.

french.about.com thinks that “anything” is a possible valid meaning of the word, as documented over here: http://french.about.com/od/expressions/a/rien.htm

But that’s probably more oriented around continental French. Usage may differ for the flavors of French in Canada, perhaps. I will have to ping the Canadian Francophones I know!

With the “sans…rien” thing, as I recall “sans” adds in a negative mood, like “ne”. I don’t think that “rien” can be used to mean “anything” as well as “nothing”, but French has no fear of the double negative, so “without finding nothing” is just fine with them. I still find it weird that French can use “plus” to both mean “more” and “no longer”, because it can be used on its own in a negative sense without the “ne” in certain circumstances, and colloquially.
